The automated detection of road surface distresses
Naidoo is a senior research technologist at the CSIR. He plays a leading role in the CSIR’s mechatronics and micro-manufacturing group, in the areas of machine learning, computer vision, wave optics and software development.
About the talk: The CSIR has developed the Visual Surveying Platform, which assists decision-makers to better understand the state of the country’s road infrastructure by sensing the environment and highlighting road defects and anomalies. The system consists of a vehicle-mounted mobile sensor, which is used to collect and analyse infrastructure data as well as a back end, which consists of a database with visualisation and reporting tools. The talk will describe how the system can help municipalities improve their short- and long-term operations.
