Prof. Dr Clemens Hoffmann
Hoffmann is the Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology IWES in Kassel, Germany. After studying at Hamburg University, he gained his doctorate at the Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik in Garching where he worked in the field of nuclear fusion. In 1995, he took up employment with Siemens AG, researching on the industrial use of artificial neural networks until 2004 when he started concentrating on renewable energy for Siemens Corporate Technology in Munich. In 2010 he assumed the position of Chief Technology Officer for the company’s “Smart Grid” project. In this capacity, he designed the innovation strategy in this field, led the global research and development and took effect on national and international legislation, regulation and standardisation before joining the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in 2012 as the Director of Fraunhofer IWES and being appointed Professor for Integrated Energy Systems at the University of Kassel.
